Scholarships & Awards Program
The purpose of this program is to:
• support the development of young musicians in the Halton area;
• find and develop new players for the orchestra
• encourage cultural diversity in the youth of the community.
To these ends, the Oakville Symphony Orchestra offers three awards:
The Young Artist Awards
The Kenneth Hollier Award
Developing Artist Awards
The Young Artist Awards, introduced in 1998, are scholarships available to players of string instruments between the ages of 16 and 23. The recipients of the awards receive $1,500 for playing a season with the Oakville Symphony where rehearsals on every Monday night are mandatory. The opportunity presents the players with exposure to other talented string players under the leadership of Roberto De Clara.
There will be four scholarships awarded for the 2007-2008 season. Two of
these will be sponsored by Mercedes-Benz
Oakville Autohaus and two by RBC
Foundation. So far, three recipients have been selected; Rachel Browne,
Greg Golaska and Junha Park, all of whom are violinists. Further auditions
will be held after the orchestra resumes in September.
The Kenneth Hollier Awardis named in honour of the first Musical Director of the Oakville Symphony and is open to local musicians who play orchestral instruments between the ages of 16 and 21. The competition is held in May and alternates annually between string instruments and non-string instruments. In 2008 it will be the turn of non-string instruments. Prize for the winner is $500 and is sponsored by RBC Financial Group.
The 2007 winner of the Kenneth Hollier Award was Junha Park, a talented violinist.
Developing Artist Awards are a component of the Kenneth Hollier competition and are awarded at the judges' discretion to outstanding competitors of High School age. The accompanying prize is $200.
In 2007, a Developing Artist Award was won by Rachel Browne, violin.
