Welcome to the 2011-2012 OSO Season!

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2011-12 season of the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. Our 44th concert season will feature a wonderful combination of exciting guest artists, splendid repertoire and the outstanding musicians of our orchestra. Each concert has been designed as both a unique experience and as part of a comprehensive overview of great orchestral repertoire.

One of the season’s musical highlights will be the exploration of Beethoven and the Concerto. Beethoven’s great genius and command of the concerto form will be readily displayed in our performances of the 3rd and 4th piano concerti and the incomparable Violin Concerto. Our Brahms Symphony cycle continues with performances of his lyrical Second Symphony, a work last performed in 2000. Other highlights include the profound Ruckert Lieder of Gustav Mahler, in honour of the centenary of the

composer’s death in 1911, and the brilliant showpiece that is the Scherzo Fantastique of Josef Suk.

The season comes to a festive conclusion with the energetic music of Spain and Latin America in our May Fiesta concerts. Brilliant guest artists for the season include award winning pianists Elissa Miller-Kay and Mauro Bertoli, Oakville Mezzo Soprano Wendy Hatala Foley, violinist Philippe Quint, and Canadian guitarist Polivios Issariotis.

As well as our subscription series, the orchestra will continue to present our popular Family Christmas concert with the Oakville Children’s Choir and, in partnership with the Outreach Committee of the OSO, a full orchestra Young People’s Concert and a series of mini- concerts for the very young in our community. 2011-12 promises to be one of the most musically varied and exciting seasons in the recent history of the OSO. We look forward to having you join us again as we explore the richness and inspiration of the live orchestra experience.
